the last accented syllable, with the syllable or syllables following, (if the chant be syllabic),or the last neum or group of notes (if the chant be neumatic), should be slight­ly drawn out, and, at the same time, sung more softly.
The note immediately preceding these
bars should be clearly longer and more lightly or softly produced. Moreover, at the bar B, an opportunity is given for a short pause to take breath, and at the bar C, for a full breath and longer pause.
But the note before the smallest bar
